Recovering Stranded & Damaged Vessels

At Mitchell Marine Management, we provide marine salvage in Cairns when a vessel is stranded, damaged, partly submerged or caught out by severe weather. The first questions are always where the boat is, what's happened and whether everyone is safe. Conditions around a damaged vessel can change quickly, so the plan has to suit the actual situation.

Our salvage work covers refloating, towing and recovering boats after storms and cyclones. We'll ask about the vessel's type, position, condition and access, then work out the right approach and whether other specialist help is needed. Once the boat is back, our shipwright services can inspect and repair the damage.

If anyone is in danger, call 000 first. For salvage enquiries, call 0460 971 939 and send photos if you can.

How We Plan a Salvage Job

A safe recovery starts with knowing the vessel and the conditions around it.

  • Vessel position. We find out whether the boat is grounded, afloat, taking on water or otherwise stuck. Its position shapes the access and equipment the job will need.
  • Damage and stability. We look at visible damage, water ingress and how the boat is sitting. These factors affect how it can be approached and moved.
  • Refloating or towing. We choose between refloating, towing or another approach based on the vessel's condition. A damaged boat doesn't always suit the same method as an intact one.
  • Post-storm recovery. We help owners recover boats affected by severe weather. Photos and a clear account of what happened help us assess the job sooner.

FAQs

Provide the vessel's type, approximate size, position and condition, along with a clear description of what happened. Photos help show visible damage, but they can't replace an assessment of on-site conditions.

No, it depends on the hull, the surrounding conditions and the extent of any damage. The recovery approach needs planning before anyone attempts to move the boat.

Put personal safety first and stay clear of unstable or hazardous areas. Once it's safe, record what you can see and get advice on recovery and repairs.
