Rigging Checks, Repairs & Replacement

At Mitchell Marine Management, we look after yacht rigging in Cairns for owners preparing for a passage, replacing worn components or checking a rig that's been laid up. Rigging carries loads that aren't obvious while a boat sits on its mooring, so we take a close look at wires, ropes, terminals and attachment points before recommending any work.

We inspect and replace standing and running rigging, including stem ball and swage fittings. We also step and unstep masts and carry out pre-passage and pre-cyclone-season checks. If the inspection turns up deck damage around a fitting, our shipwright services cover the repair.

Tell us about the rig, the problem and any changes you've noticed. Call 0460 971 939 to book an inspection.

Standing Rigging, Running Rigging & Mast Work

The right place to start depends on the age, condition and use of the rig.

  • Standing rigging. We inspect and replace the wire, terminals and fittings that support the mast. An inspection shows which components need replacing now and which can wait.
  • Running rigging. We replace worn halyards, sheets and control lines. Chafe, stiffness or lines that are hard to handle under load are all worth mentioning when you get in touch.
  • Mast stepping and unstepping. We plan the lift around access, fittings and how your boat is set up. Getting that planning right protects the mast, the deck and the rigging.
  • Passage and cyclone-season checks. We inspect the rig before an extended trip or the start of cyclone season. It's a good time to catch visible wear, though no inspection can rule out every failure at sea.

FAQs

Standing rigging is the fixed wire and fittings that hold the mast up, while running rigging is the lines used to raise, lower and trim the sails. Each wears differently, so they're checked for different problems.

Look for corrosion, cracks, broken wire strands, loose fittings or any unusual movement. Some defects are hard to judge from the deck, so a closer inspection is often needed.

Yes, a pre-passage inspection can pick up visible wear and maintenance items before you leave. It's an important part of preparation, although it can't remove every risk at sea.
