Keeping Your Sails in Working Order

At Mitchell Marine Management, our sailmaker service in Cairns helps owners deal with worn cloth, failing stitching and sails that no longer set the way they should. A small tear, loose seam or tired UV strip is easy to fix early, but it can get much worse once the sail is under load again.

We make new sails, repair existing ones and replace UV protection strips. Before recommending anything, we look at the sail's condition and how you use it, then tell you whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense. If the problem lies with the lines or fittings that control the sail, our yacht rigging service can help.

Let us know which sail is affected and how the damage happened. Photos are a useful start. Call 0460 971 939 to talk it through.

New Sails, Repairs & UV Strips

The cloth, stitching and shape of a sail all affect what work makes sense.

  • New sails. We make sails to suit your boat and the way you sail it. Talking through how and where you sail helps us get the specification right.
  • Tear and seam repairs. We repair damaged cloth and seams, taking the surrounding wear into account. A good repair strengthens the area properly rather than just covering the split.
  • UV strip replacement. We replace worn or loose UV strips on sails that spend long periods furled. Without that protection, exposed cloth breaks down even when the sail isn't in use.
  • Condition checks. We check stitching, panels, corners and edges for wear. It helps you decide what needs fixing now and what to keep an eye on.

FAQs

Not always, as it depends on the condition of the cloth, the size and position of the tear and the wear around it. A heavily weakened sail may need more than a patch.

A UV strip protects the exposed edges of a furled sail from sunlight. Once it wears out, the sailcloth underneath starts to break down.

Check seams, stitching, corners and exposed edges for fraying, damage or loose sections. Small problems are easiest to spot with the sail fully laid out.
